New Parliamentary Rowing Group formed

The Rowing Service

Thursday 25th November 2004

Last night saw the formal launch of a new All-Party Parliamentary Rowing Group, whose aim is to promote the sport within the House of Commons and House of Lords. Twenty MPs and peers had already signed up (the minimum required to create such a group) and after last night's reception in Westminster it is probable that several other sportingly-minded Parliamentary stalwarts will add their names to the list.

The reception was attended by Richard Caborn MP, the Minister of State for Sport, by Sir Steve Redgrave, and by several members of the ARA Executive. Both Caborn and Redgrave spoke glowingly of the sport, and of the need to use the 2005 World Cup Regatta next May at Dorney as a showcase for British Olympic sport in general. The May World Cup will be the last relevant event hosted by Britain before the IOC decides which city out of London, Paris, New York, Madrid and Moscow will win the Olympics for 2012, and we are expecting several IOC members to visit the regatta.
