Results, Friday 8th August 2003 - repechages/semifinals

The cancellation of Friday's racing gave organisers the headache of having to get through qualification quicker than usual. They did it by running combination reps/semis, in which all crews not yet qualified to finals raced off sudden-death for the remaining places. One event, the junior women's double scull, ran normal semifinals consisting of those who had already qualified, with the remainder in time order from Wednesday.

The racing distance was also changed, the continuing high winds allowing use of only the first 1000 metres of the course for side-by-side rowing, after which crews paddled home in whatever shelter they could get by the bank. Times to the finish at 1000 metres are quoted on the official results as to 2km, slightly confusingly. The wind was entirely tail once more, so that even the thousand-metre times are very fast. A multitude of crabs were caught right down the course on the bumpy, white-capped water, and some of the most successful racers were those who took the trouble to connect properly to the water. Many races were photofinishes and several were decided by crabs or fluffed strokes caught feet from the finish line.

Friday's competition saw a few 7-boat races, acting as a test for Saturday's schedule, which will require the use of eight lanes in many cases.
