The Boat Race: Christopher Dodd.

Bowden moves to Oxford

Oxford University Boat Club has appointed Sean Bowden as full- time head coach to take effect from September, writes Christopher Dodd.

His contract will run for the next three Boat Races and he will be working with Dutch Olympic coach René Mijnders , who has guided Oxford over the past year. Mijnders will continue as senior coach and technical adviser.

'I'm very much looking forward to working with Oxford,' said Bowden. 'I believe René and I can put together a very good programme for the future.'
Sean, who is 34, began his rowing career at Thames Rowing Club in London but took on a coaching role at Nottinghamshire County Rowing Association in 1989. Over the next five years his oarsmen won 32 medals at world championship level. He also coached the winning Cambridge crews of 1993 and 1994, the British gold medal winning lightweight eight of 1994, the Olympic eight in Atlanta last year, and is guiding this year's lightweight four and eight for the world championships.

Penny Chuter's contract as Oxford's development coach ends in mid-September. Daniel Topolski's term as director of coaching ends in August, but his involvement with OUBC will continue.
