Andrew Lindsay is new Oxford President

Andre Lindsay, aged 20, an undergraduate at Brasenose College in his second year studying Geography, has been elected President of Oxford University Boat Club for the 1998 Boat Race. He replaces Tim Foster, stroke of this year's crew, who relinquishes the post after failing to secure a place to read Psychology.

Lindsay, from Glenuig in Scotland, is a former junior international bronze medallist from Eton and a 1997 Blue. He has been acting President throughout the summer while Foster was training with the GB four which won a gold medal at the World Championships in September.

"It is a great pity Tim cannot race with us this year", said Lindsay. "But I am eager to improve on our Boat Race performance of 1997 and very much look forward to an Oxford victory." Foster said: "I am very disappointed not to have been accepted for my chosen course. I will now be continuing my studies for an MSc. at Brunel University and will focus my rowing on preparing for the Sydney Olympics with the four. I am confident, though, that my successor is more than capable fo leading Oxford to victory next March."

Lindsay's opposite number at Cambridge is David Cassidy, aged 21, an undergraduate at Trinity Hall in his third year studying Medicine. Cassidy, from Shrewsbury, rowed for Goldie in 1996 and was in this year's victorious Blue Boat.

The 144th Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race for the Beefeater Gin Trophy will take place on Saturday March 28th (2:30 pm).
