Di Ellis becomes first female Steward

Di Ellis, chairman of the Amateur Rowing Association, has been elected a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta. Mrs Ellis becomes the first woman to be elected a Steward in her own right. She rowed for St George's Ladies' RC and stroked the GB eight in the 1966 European Championships. She qualified as an umpire in 1978 and has chaired the ARA Executive Committee since 1989. She also represents the ARA on the British Olympic Association.

Other posts held by Mrs Ellis at one time or another include chairman of the women's commission, chairman of the National Championships Committee, and membership of the ARA's development committee and the competition committee.

Richard Stanhope and Richard Phelps were also elected Stewards at HRR's December Meeting. Stanhope is a World and Olympic silver medalist (1980 and 1981). He competed in four Olympic regattas, eight world championships and 16 Henleys - the latest in 1997 when he helped Molesey win the Wyfold, his seventh Henley medal. He is aged 40 and is a surveyor married to the former international Rachel Hirst.

Richard Phelps, aged 32, is a merchant banker who won the Boat Race three times with Cambridge (1993-95), the last occasion as President of CUBC. He has won two bronze medals in British eights at world championships (1989, 1991) and made six Henley appearances, once in the Ladies' where his Leander crew reached the final and five times in the Grand, winning against Dinamo and the Soviet Army in 1992. He is married to Annamarie Stapleton, another former international.
