Women's workshop, March

Getting WIRe'd/h2> About 40 people attended the first workshop organised by WIRe at Thames RC after the Women's Head. Dr. Kirsten Barnes's topic was 'No Brain, No Gain' which outlined and highlighted the importance of the mind in competitive rowing. She drew on her own experiences as a double Olympic gold medallist. Andy Ripley gave a very entertaining talk on the 'topic I know best', rugby. His insight into the 1974 Lion's tour of South Africa was topical and hilarious. Ripley touched on the subject of selection for the Wednesday match or the Saturday match. It was evident that he was talking from the heart, perhaps fresh in his mind after his recent brush with selectors for a place in the Goldie crew.

As chairman of the Women's Rowing Commission, Annamarie Phelps led a question and answer session, which focused on the role Women's Henley Regatta and Royal Henley Regatta play within the women's rowing calendar.
