Stewards give £190,000 to Project Oarsome

The Henley Royal Regatta Stewards' Charitable Trust is backing the Amateur Rowing Association's Project Oarsome with a grant of £190,000 over the next four years. This is a nationwide project to bring rowing into schools and communities that have never before been involved in the sport. Project Oarsome aims to establish junior rowing sections in approximately 50 clubs by 2001, with each club linked into two state schools within a defined catchment area within the local community.

The project has been submitted to the Lottery for major funding, and the Stewards' Charitable Trust have promised up to £190,000 over four years towards the cost of the equipment (boats, oars, ergometers) required by the partner clubs to develop junior grass roots rowing. The trustees said, 'Project Oarsome is a very well conceived and well structured programme to expand and develop the grass roots of the sport of rowing. They applaud this initiative and are very pleased to be able to offer this support.'
