BUSA Student Captains Day, 10th October, Nottingham

Boost for student rowers at BUSA conference

Rachel Quarrell reports

For many student rowers, the start of the academic year is a scary time, as they jump into the deep end of being a boat club official. BUSA held a conference for student administrators on October 10, to help them over the hurdles of running their clubs, writes Rachel Quarrell. Well attended, from more than a dozen institutions including Manchester, the London hospitals, York and Bath, this second annual 'BUSA Rowing Captains' Day' proved informative and helpful.

Nigel Mayglothling, chair of the BUSA rowing committee, hosted proceedings at the University of Nottingham. With his usual style of genial leg-pulling, he held forth in useful detail on BUSA itself, coaching development, and how to finance rowing clubs.

RCDO and ARA communications officer Colin Brown enlightened listeners on the ARA, university sports contacts, and how to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of your club.

Geoff Holloway and Rachel Quarrell discussed safety, including issues of liability, minibus-driving law, and why it's worth training your coxes carefully.

The day closed with a panel session also involving RCDOs Bryan Wilson and Gordon Burton, and BUSA representative Alison Faiers.
