The University of London Trial VIIIs race returned on Friday following a two year hiatus. The event, which follows the Varsity boat race course, pitted Fist against Fury in the Men's race and Bubble against Squeak in the Women's.

In the men's event, Fist, with Olympian Pete Wells on board, took an early lead coming past Craven Cottage and never looked back, winning the first of the two trials by a length and a half. The second trial, from the Eyot to Chiswick Bridge, was a closer affair, with Fist coming home half a length in front of Fury.

In the women's event, Bubble came back from a deficit at the half way mark to win by half a length, before winning the second trial by a length.

With several top internationals unavailable for the event, the quality of racing highlights the strength in depth of ULBC's men's and women's squads. With numerous athletes involved hoping to make the Beijing and London Olympics, the future of British rowing appears to be in safe, if rather blistered, hands.

Photos will go up here on Hamish Roots' Light Over Water website at some point.
