14th November 2006: "Black Holes on our doorstep"

Although black holes are exotic objects by the standards of everyday life, astronomers are now confident that they exist. Professor Davies will discuss how black holes with masses about 10 times that of the Sun have been discovered. He will show how we have become aware that a black hole weighing over one million times the mass of the Sun resides at the heart of the Milky Way, and will extend that idea to suggest that the most massive galaxies host black holes with masses one thousand times greater. He will also speculate on the role of black holes in building galaxies and shaping the Universe we see around us.
