8th January 2002: "Stem Cells and Therapeutic Cloning"

Dr Evan Harris has a reputation as a strong campaigner for Oxford West & Abingdon, as part of the strong local Liberal Democrat Team. Trained as a medical practitioner he sits on the Liberal Democrat Front Benches as Health Spokesman.

Dr Harris was born in Sheffield in 1965, and studied medicine at Wadham College, Oxford. Having worked in the NHS first in Liverpool and Oxford, he was selected to fight Oxford West and Abingdon in 1994, after 8 years as a local campaigner and election organiser.

One of the fastest moving areas of science is that of stem cell and cloning research. The potential for medical advances that could be achieved by using these technologies is enormous, but do the benefits outweigh the costs? Until very recently stem cells needed to be taken from embryos and cloning brings to mind designer babies and the production of individuals for spare body parts. Dr Harris will address the scientific, ethical and political minefield revealed by this research.
