12th June 2001: "Limits of Human Physical Performance"

Will Hopkins is professor of Sports Science at the University of Otago, New Zealand. His research centres around the enhancement of performance in sport and the processes that occur in our bodies when we exercise. He is co-founder and general editor of the Sportscience website www.sportsci.org and an active member of the Sports Medicine community, editing journals and influencing research policy.

Why do world records in every sport continue to get broken? When, if ever, will human physical performance reach a peak that cannot be surpassed? What limits how much power we can generate in our movements? What are our bodies capable of over a fraction of a second, or over many hours?

Professor Hopkins will deal with these questions and explain the contribution of genes, training, nutrition,, drugs, technology and chance to past and future trends in world-record performance.
